Thanks to modern technology like hearing aids, cochlear implants and classroom amplification systems, new possibilities have opened for deaf children. By including them into mainstream education, with the necessary support, they can acquire normal spoken language and thereby reach their full potential. We change lives by raising school bursary funds for deaf children from economically poor homes to enable them to receive the best possible oral education at the Eduplex School. Eduplex is a mainstream school which includes a small number of deaf children in each class, serving as a model for inclusive education. Estimated individual sponsorship of a deaf child per annum : R90 000 (Includes school fees, 2 meals per day, after care, uniform,educational outings and audiological management, but excludes the hearing aids which are sponsored). Eduplex currently has more than 40 children dependent on bursaries. The pandemic has had a dreadful impact on the needs of our deaf bursary children.Every so often, teaching online is extremely difficult as many of these children does not have access to a cell phone/computer. For this purpose, we are now also raising funds to help with second-hand laptops/cellphones, and data for devices to ensure access to online teaching and connections with their teachers and peers. Provision for basic needs, like food parcels for the families of our bursary children as well as clothing, is becoming more apparent as more jobs were also lost due to Covid-19.
