As the holiday bells start jingling, we often get hit with the million-dollar question: "We’ve got 450 kg of bottle tops; where do we drop them off for a wheelchair?" Well, gather 'round, Sweethearts! Our mission is more than just a top swap for wheelchairs. We’re all about crafting custom wheelchairs that fit like a glove for each unique superstar in need. Think of it like finding the perfect pair of shoes—because a standard wheelchair is like wearing flip-flops to a marathon; it just won’t cut it!

If you know someone who could use a wheelchair, don’t leave them hanging! Get their name onto our waiting list on our website’s FAQ section. This way, we can unite forces across the nation and ensure everyone gets the right wheelie for their needs.

Now, just to set the stage: while a regular wheelchair needs a whopping 1,750 kg of bottle tops or 350 kg of bread tags, our awesome beneficiaries often require something a bit more specialized, so those numbers might go up. We throw out that 450 kg or 50 kg as a rallying cry, but remember, the actual needs can vary—just like everyone's shoe size!

Last week Friday, we came across a post about a dog sitting somewhere between farms, right at the entrance of one, under a bush. Unfortunately, with no SPCA in Secunda anymore and the other organization not yet operational, we took it upon ourselves to go and help. It was quite a drive, almost 40 km out of Secunda and 40 km back.

The person who alerted us was worried the dog had been hit by a car as it was limping. We managed to safely get the dog out from under the bush and into the car, taking him straight to the vet. His paw pads were severely burned and cracked, with clear marks on all four paws, indicating that he may have been tied up or caught in some snare. His infection levels were extremely high, and he is now being treated with medication.

He is currently in kennels due to a shortage of foster homes. He will be neutered on Tuesday.

Recently, a lost puppy appeared in Evander, showing signs of distress – vomiting and being severely underweight. Concerned residents advised taking her to a vet, but it's not easy for most people to take an unfamiliar dog to a vet on a Sunday night and pay an after-hours fee.

We took her in. Initially, there were concerns about parvo, but Madelize quickly realized it could be something more serious, like megaesophagus. She was vomiting after every meal, without any diarrhea, and the moment she ate, she would bring it up again.

Megaesophagus involves a narrowing of the esophagus, preventing food from passing through, which means constant hunger but no ability to keep food down.

A vet visit confirmed the diagnosis, but it also revealed the possibility of PRAAA (Persistent Right Aortic Arch Anomaly), a condition where a blood vessel constricts the esophagus, making it difficult for food to pass.

Feeding techniques had to be adjusted, including having her eat from an elevated position and keeping her upright for at least 20 minutes after meals.

A barium study confirmed our worst fear: Alice has PRAAA 😢.

But we aren’t giving up! After several calls, Onderstepoort has agreed to perform the surgery – and at the most affordable cost.

All her tests were sent by Dr. Corne, Innovavet Veterinary Clinic  yesterday, and the surgical team, at Onderstepoort Opvsc is reviewing them to confirm her appointment date. While there are risks involved, there’s hope that after surgery, she could lead a full life, eating without complications and no longer needing special care.

We are not asking for donations, but simply raising awareness about this condition. If you'd like to learn more or even contribute, you are more than welcome. 
The procedure will be funded by my husband.

 JFF Awareness Talks is an initiative of the Jes Foord Foundation designed to KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE by making them aware of the dangers we face in our society. We’ve heard a lot of parents say “it won’t happen to my child”, but rape and sexual assault is an unfortunate reality that happens every 29 seconds in South Africa.
Our talks are AWARENESS-based and focused around CONSENT, educating young learners that they can use their voices as a tool of self defense. They teach them about good touch VS. bad touch, NO means NO and sets the record straight on ‘stranger danger’.
All of our talks are AGE-APPROPRIATE, inclusive and delivered in both English and Zulu. Most of all, we encourage these young learners to identify FIVE people who they trust and who they can talk to about ANYTHING - no matter what anyone else says.

Africa Food for Thought has been bringing food security to children across the West Rand of Johannesburg, South Africa since 2006. Our vision is to make sure that their children can focus on their studies and not need to worry about where their next meal is coming from. Although our promise is food, we also provide other support in aid of education throughout the year.

Your support will allow us to continue providing these children with food security!

We currently have five school feeding projects and fifty six creches receiving daily meals. We also provide food security to forty eight households caring for orphaned and vulnerable children. The households and creches are our main focus, with each household receiving a monthly food parcel for as long as their children are in school, and each creche child receiving two cooked meals and two snacks each day. 

Whilst we equip and supply the projects, it is the parents and community volunteers who run the project, do the cooking and serving. In this way, we encourage schools and communities to own the project, while we provide support. 

As our children we feed have gotten older, we have also started supporting them in their tertiary education through the Peter France Bursary Fund. Unemployment is staggeringly high in South Africa, and young people with a tertiary qualification of any sort are significantly more likely to be employed than those with only a Matric.

Yesterday marked a new chapter for a beautiful young female dog, about 2 years old, who had  given birth in January already. 

Symptoms had been present since January, but it was only two weeks ago that help was sought, and I struggled for some time to get her out of the location.

This morning, a thorough veterinary examination confirmed my suspicion—TVT (Transmissible Venereal Tumor).

The prognosis is good if treatment is started early.

The choices were on the table: euthanize or treat.

She is young, full of life, a border collie mix. Living on a chain was torture, and she deserves care. Together with Dr. Corne, we decided to proceed with treatment.

She received her first round of chemotherapy this morning,(r to 6 more to go) along with antibiotics and pain medication. The infection is quite severe.

Feral Watch And TNR (Secunda Mpumalanga)  have a very special bond with Sniff Snuff Kennels , and without hesitation, Chantel said she is more than welcome to stay there during her treatment.

She is up and about, enjoying her freedom, and it’s hard to understand how she had to live in such harsh conditions.

But she's now a normal happy running around dog 🐶

Help Needed for a Rescued Dog in Evander 

We recently learned about a poor dog and his Jack Russell companion who were left behind by their owner in Evander 😢. Thankfully, a kind-hearted person took them in, providing food and care, but couldn't afford the necessary medical treatment.

With the help of Dr. Malinda at Evander Dierekliniek, we discovered that the dog had troubling growths in both eyes. He was admitted for a thorough examination under anesthesia, and two growths were successfully removed.

He's now discharged and receiving medication, with our dedicated foster mom, Louise, ensuring he gets the treatment he needs.

I want to ask for any donations to cover his vet bills. Any contribution, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated.

**A Unique Rescue situation ** 🐾

We recently received a call about a dog biting a potbelly pig, and pig screaming, like they do 😥After being in contact with Bethal SPCA and Mpumalanga NSPCA liaison Mpo, were guided how to handle the situation.
 
Our dedicated team, led by my husband Andries and son-in-law David, managed the rescue while staying in constant contact with Mpo. 

The potbelly pig, having been injured before in a similar manner, was surrendered to Feral Watch and TNR by the concerned owner. - they had the pig for years but can't keep them apart, and due to health concerns of the human keeping him would not be possible. 


Immediate vet treatment was arranged, and thanks to Dr. Malinda, the pig received excellent medical care. We also found a perfect new home for the pig, where it will continue to receive top-notch care from a wonderful, yet anonymous, individual.

A huge thank you to Bethal SPCA Bethal DBV and Mpo from NSPCA - National Council of SPCAs  for their guidance throughout this unusual rescue. And a special shoutout to Andries and David for handling it like pros!

Mandela Day is a globally commemorated event celebrating the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela on his birthday, 18 July. This is a day when everyone is encouraged to emulate Madiba’s actions, by putting aside tensions and working together for a common good. Individuals are called on to give just 67 minutes of their time for community service - a drop in the ocean compared to Madiba’s 67 years of fighting for social justice and equality. 

President, activist, Tata, Father of the Nation… Madiba filled many roles in his 95 years, but throughout it all, he fought for those who couldn’t fight for themselves. It’s time for us to all take up that fight, to harness the power within each of us to create positive change in our communities. 

South Africa’s senior citizens need your help. Eye health is critical, yet financial challenges mean that only a fraction of our elderly can access life-changing interventions. This month, in honour of Tata Madiba, you can help the African Eye Institute raise R67 000 for our Elderly Vision Screening, bringing eye health services to our underserved communities.
