Here's a little more info about this opportunity...
The increasing number of women offenders has left many governments of today faced with a dilemma on how to handle some challenging cases involving mothers with infants or pregnant mothers at the time of sentencing. It is a fact that the children accompanying their mothers or born in prison have not committed any crime and, as such, the government has a special responsibility to ensure that the children’s rights and welfare needs are maintained during their stay with their mothers in prison. However , children of incarcerated mothers are forgotten victims of imprisonment. They are an invisible and highly vulnerable group whose rights and welfare are affected at every stage of criminal proceedings against their mother. The particular vulnerability and marginalization of children with incarcerated mothers are not sufficiently recognized in this country and these children do not always receive the care and protection they need. The large majority also live in squalid conditions and many suffer from poor nutrition. These experiences put children at greater risk for mental and physical health issues. While there are calls for this to change, communities, corporates, individuals have the strongest role in supporting these children and until such time as better policies and greater governmental funding are available.
