Our home offers full time care and accommodation for 57 physically disabled adults. They have varying disabilities and some 90% rely on mobility aids for movement. However many do not have funds or access to resource to support their mobility needs. Wheelchair batteries and accessories are so expensive. At present they recieve a measly R1600 disability pension. A set of batteries cost about R2400. We have 2 residents that require batteries (Dylan and Mark) and we have residents that need new electric chairs - Gary, Johan and Ricardo. These chairs offer them freedom of movement. As it is, their lives are compromised due to limited movement... so being able to support their existing range by giving movement - so affording them the opportunity of independence and a range of options.... such as going to Spar up the road, visiting friends in the neighbourhood and just getting around the home without having to always depend on someone to push.
