Women and children are the most vulnerable and face inequalities in South Africa. Poverty, lack of economic opportunities, patriarchal gender norms and dependency has led to women in a continuum of marginalization. The culture of violence stems from South Africa’s historical context such as poverty, inequality, lack of power, destabilizing families through migration has led to normalization of violence as an act to exert power. The scourge of Gender based violence (GBV) against women has heightened in the last 5 years which has led the National strategic plan framework for Gender based violence and femicide in collaboration with government and civil society. The unified policy and programming structure provides a strengthened national response to address this crisis. With more than 50% of the population in South Africa constituting women, the ownership of safety has become a shared responsibility.
