Khaya Lam is a project of the Free Market Foundation (FMF). The FMF is a public benefit organisation with 8 staff members (no owners, no shareholders), managed by a Board elected by paid-up members. Khaya Lam has to date transferred 18,500 properties from municipalities, turning black and coloured tenants into homeowners. Many of our funders require a B-BBEE certificate from us. It is on the basis of our recipients that we wish to be judged in this regard. We understand that as a non-profit classified as a Qualifying Small Enterprise (QSE), a B-BBEE certificate is obtained through a verification process by a SANAS accredited agency, unless the non-profit is 51% or 100% black-owned, in which case a sworn affidavit can be used to claim Level 2 or 1 status, respectively. As stated above, we do not qualify on ownership grounds. We have been quoted a sizeable sum for an assessment. We are looking for a volunteer who is in a position to assist with the assessment which will make it possible for us to continue to provide title deeds to black South Africans.
