How can you help?

Help NID-National Institute for the Deaf with 100 volunteers for promoting South African Sign Language!

Here's a little more info about this opportunity...

Please help NID to promote the use of South African Sign Language! Do this by: 1) Downloading the App; 2) Utilising this resource to communicate in SASL; 3) Share the App with your colleagues, friends, and family. Remember…you are only a click away to help make a difference! NID and the Deaf community are thrilled that SASL has been approved by the Constitutional Review Committee of the South African Parliament to be South Africa’s 12th official language. There is a massive increase in public awareness and resources for SASL. With the wonderful assistance from funders, NID started developing the NID Online SASL Video Dictionary in 2015. This ongoing, ever-expanding resource encompasses the development of the first SASL glossary. The dictionary features SASL variations used at several schools for the Deaf, and Deaf communities across the country, along with the relevant English term. This allows the users to look up different English words, finding the sign, or do a reverse search to look up a sign, finding the correspondent English word. NID is very proud to report that up to date we have produced over 12 000 signs, which includes more than 4 000 signs freely available to the public. This resource is available as an app on all mobile platforms and can also be accessed at www.learnsasl.com. Our dictionary is also supported by the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB).

Helpful tips

Stay safe

  1. 1Don’t pass any personal information to people you haven’t met offline before.
  2. 2When meeting one of your contacts offline for the first time, always be sure to arrange to meet in a public place.
  3. 3Make sure that you are not left alone with someone that you have never met before.
  4. 4Know where you’re going. If you’re headed off the beaten track or into an unfamiliar part of town, be sure you have directions and a GPS or map book.
  5. 5If you feel unsafe, consult the person in charge and let him or her know.
  6. 6Avoid wearing expensive jewellery: it could get damaged, lost or stolen.
  7. 7Ask, ask, ask! If you’re worried about something or concerned about your safety in a certain situation, ask the person in charge.
