Special Needs met by Afterschool programme

How attending afterschool has impacted a boy’s life — Grade 4 learner finding a school suitable for his needs

Clayton only came to Afterschool the beginning of 2019. A grade 4 learner unable to communicate with the other children, nobody wanted to play with him, he could not write and could not read, at any level, and was very clingy to his facilitator. He used to sit under her table during class activities. Please be reminded he was in Grade 4. Amy, his facilitator realised that he could not read or write, or recognise simple numbers. We had him assessed by Kip McGrath in Maths and English he had below a grade R level. We spoke to his parents about his performance, and asked if he was assessed yet by the school, they said yes. We then went to see the Principal of the school and they indicated he was referred but the process was not completed by the school. Finances played a big part in the delay as the family only receives a social grant. With the determination of his facilitator Amy, back and forth from the Department of Education and social support service, we can confirm that Layton is now on the data base where he will finally find a school suited to his needs. He has improved his speech and is writing and reading at a Grade 1 level. He no longer sits under his facilitator’s table and he is playing and enjoying being social with the other children
