Rose-Act Holiday Club
Rose Act Holiday Club Focuses on the story of Joseph...
Rose-Act Saturday School held its annual Holiday Club over four days just after the Easter Weekend. Each year, the Holiday Club offers students of the school the chance to learn, create, play games and generally have fun under the guidance of a group of dedicated volunteer leaders. Louise Cameron, principal of Rose-Act, explained that the Holiday Club, and the Annual Camp in September, fulfils a vital role in the overall teaching strategy of Rose-Act. “Life Orientation is taught alongside the curriculum focused on Maths and English, so as to fulfil our mandate of offering our students a balanced curriculum plus essential values-based teaching.” This year, 160 learners from grades 4 to 9 attended the Holiday Club in Alexandra. There were 12 leaders, many of them previous students at Rose-Act, in charge of groups of different ages of children. “The leaders are pivotal to the success of the Club. They work hard all week with the children, teaching, leading and organising games and craftwork sessions” explained Louise. The theme of the Holiday Club this year was ‘Joseph’, and the children learned about his life from being a young dreamer right up to when he became ruler of Egypt, was reconciled with his brothers and brought his family to Egypt. The themes were the dangers of arrogance, anger and violence as well as the benefits of perseverance, forgiveness and repentance. At the end of the week the children made a beautiful “Joseph coloured blanket” out of small coloured squares of cloth on which they wrote what they had learned. “The children went away with some important life lessons from the story of Joseph,” concluded Louise. KOKETSO (Grade 6) “I learnt that I must control my anger and not allow other people to control me. I learnt that God is always there, even through the tough times.” PHOKELA (Grade 4) “I learnt that I must walk away from someone rather than beating them.” TSEHPANG (Grade 8) “When I get jealous and angry, I will just let it go and move on with life.” WANGA (Grade 9) “I’ve been taught that I must be proud of myself and not be jealous of other people. I must take a look at what I have and not what they have.”
