A central component of our Child-Headed Households (CHH) project is the home visits. Each member of the team is assigned a family whom they look after and build a relationship with. This includes, among other things, visiting the children at home twice a month, and more frequently if deemed necessary. The team members often walk long distances to reach their families, navigating tiny corners and narrow passages in Alex along the way. The families are always thrilled to have visitors; they delight in the opportunity to share their joys, their problems and details of their lives with a patient listener. It is often evident that after the team has listened, asked questions, prayed, and provided encouragement and advice, that the families feel less burdened and more hopeful. These home visits help the CHH team gather much needed information regarding the needs of the children such as the children’s age, shoe size, when they last got new shoes, which school they attend, their grade, how they are coping in class, what time they go to sleep, which room they sleep in, allergies or medication they are taking and what they dream of becoming be one day.
