Stories of Hope
At the National Institute for the Deaf’s (NID) Care department, we provide a holistic, therapeutic, and safe environment that supports the unique needs of multiple-disabled deaf adults. Here every resident can thrive within a peaceful and deaf-friendly community. Hendrik Brown (47) has been a beloved resident at Adult Care for 28 years. Despite Hendrik’s physical and cognitive disabilities, he soon found his feet and learned new skills that made his life more meaningful. Here he can do tasks he likes and chat with friends in his own language. Stella Botha (80) lost her husband during the Covid-19 pandemic and then joined Elderly Care. She has adapted very well here among people her own age who also use sign language. She has a good sense of humour and is at her happiest when she can entertain the other elderly people and they laugh a lot at her. Daniël Pretorius (58) arrived at Adult Care without language 29 years ago. However, he learned sign language in no time and a new world opened for him. Suddenly there are people who understand him and friends with whom he can communicate. He can make his needs known and express his emotions. Now Daniel can’t stop talking and laughing.
