More about Masicorp

Masicorp assists the Masiphumelele community by offering education programmes, to support residents uplift themselves out of poverty. There are approximately 40 000 people living in the township, still disadvantaged by the legacy of apartheid spatial planning. Many shack-dwellers live in poverty and struggle with daily issues of overcrowding, fires or floods, lack of basic services and sanitation, crime, and unemployment. We believe that by reaching children ages 0-6 and raising the standard of early childhood education in the community, a firm foundation will be laid for future learning and children will start their primary school career with the best possible chance to succeed. There are an estimated 6000 pre-school age children in the area, many of whom have no form of schooling. Many attend backyard shack crèches, run by owners with no formal training, skills or educational materials. Masicorp endeavours to reach as many of these children as possible, by upskilling the crèche ...

Our three pre-schools, Masi Educare, Chasmay Educare and Sunnydale Educare, care for over 300 children from the Masi community, providing them with quality, affordable early childhood education, from ages 18 months to 6 years of age. Our teachers (all members of the Masi community) are all provided with the necessary early childhood development certification needed to look after the children in their care. Children at these centres receive 2 cooked meals per day, as well as fruit. They also receive termly assessments ensuring that they are progressing, or to identify learning challenges. We aim for each child to leave our care with a firm foundation for future learning.

High school boys and girls from Masi High attend weekly lessons in sewing in our High School Sewing Programme, held in partnership with The Sewing Café, at Chasmay Road Campus.

The objective of this project is to upskill youth through skills development training – learning how to sew. This skill can be used as a means of employment, or to inspire these young people to follow a career in fashion or design.

The project aims to reach many of the informal crèches in Masiphumelele and provide these children with art therapy, crafts, singing, dancing and other educational activities.
This is done in an effort to upskill the carers/crèche owners who often do not have the skills to provide the children in their care with, engaging and stimulating educational activities. Carers attend regular sessions along with the children and are also provided with educational equipment and stationery which can be used at their crèche.

As well as our English Hub, we also run a Maths Lab at Ukhanyo Primary School. We train Ukhanyo Primary School teachers in proven effective maths instruction, by modelling teaching methods and classroom management. Trust is fostered as teachers see for themselves the dramatic improvement in learner confidence and comprehension. We inspire learners to love mathematics through interesting classes, fun-filled afternoon Maths Clubs and by opening up the Maths Lab at break times so that any learner can come in to do mathematics.
