“A man is not a man until he has a house of his own” – Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Khaya Lam has a simple goal: to transfer state-owned property to the private sector, specifically council-owned rental stock to the legal tenant. This is done at no cost to the council or tenant due to generous sponsorship from individual and corporate donors and discounted rates from conveyancers with whom we partner. At just R3,750 per transfer, Khaya Lam has to date provided over 18,500 township residents with title deeds. At a conservative estimate of R100,000 per home transferred, Khaya Lam has injected R1,8 billion into the South African economy. Approximately 1,2 million council properties remain to be transferred.
