Did you know that many communities in Southern Africa suffer severe shortages of water and almost constant difficulties in accessing it with many having to make multiple trips every day, walking for miles while carrying multiple buckets just to collect drinkable water? Young women and children are usually the ones making these trips, balancing heavy loads of water (about five gallons/25kg) on their heads, and spending so much of their daily routine collecting water deprives them of a lot of their time and energy which could otherwise be focused on education and entrepreneurship to help improve their lives and that of their families and communities. These daily water challenges faced by these communities begs the question of how this could be improved and prompted the innovative creation of the Hippo Water Roller in 1991. A simple design, the Hippo Roller holds twenty-four gallons per drum/90 litres and easily rolls over most terrain thus reducing the time and energy exhausted from fetching water from a well. That’s equivalent to carrying four or five heavy buckets on the head. This significantly reduces the amount of time spent fetching water each and every day. Allowing more time for education and sustainable gardening. Some major highlights are that the Hippo Roller requires low to zero maintenance as it is designed for tough rural conditions. Manufactured strong and durable with an average lifespan of five to seven years, though often lasting ten years or more. Supports and promotes sustainable small-scale farming with the added benefit of income generation opportunities. Almost every day we are bombarded with pleas to aid a person or community with supplying a Roller: “Would love to have a hippo roller in our community because we don’t have water at all, so we go to town for water, carrying the water back on our heads.” “Hi is it possible to get your hippo roller in Sierra Leone. My friend and her family could seriously use a device like that as at the moment they have to carry water for more than an hour.” Though we do our best to find sponsors for these people, we face many challenges and as such we decided to create our own foundation to accommodate these people and communities in a better manner by raising funds ourselves to provide them with Hippo Rollers. Finally, it may be worth mentioning that the Hippo Roller has also been endorsed by many influential leaders and businesses around the world including the former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, who recognized the Social Impact Value of the Hippo Roller through empowering women and youth while providing sustainability and job creation for the unemployed. More water means a better quality of life, children are enabled to get to school and gain better employment opportunities.
