Humble Beginnings to Empowering Change
From Humble Beginnings to Empowering Change
Itumeleng Segona (32) grew up in Tladi, Soweto, and was raised by a single mother who worked tirelessly to provide for her and her siblings. Envisioning a successful future was hard, but Itumeleng’s relentless will to succeed instilled a deep sense of resilience in her. After matriculating, Itumeleng enrolled in the computer training course at the Emdeni Skills Development Centre and graduated with a certificate in 2013. Determined to pursue her passion for teaching, Itumeleng, furthered her studies and earned a Bachelor of Education in Mathematics and a post-graduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. With her studies completed, she founded the South African Learner Support Organisation (SALSO) – a learner support organisation aimed at assisting youth in school and those who have finished school. Based in Lufhereng – Soweto, SALSO is dedicated to tackling learning barriers through various programmes that empower the youth in her community. Itumeleng’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and community support. She has moved from humble beginnings to creating a legacy of empowerment. We want to thank each and every donor, staff member, and volunteer who played a part in Itumeleng’s success story. Her journey shows that your path to success begins with an opportunity, requires the first step, and depends on dedication and commitment. Embrace it and never look back.
